I'm now living in an area called Bongmudong, a bustling development just north of the Daegu International Airport, on the city fringes. The fantastic thing about this area is that, cliched as the phrase is, it really does contain the best of both worlds. I live in the Easiapolis apartment complex, right on the edge of the developing area. To the west and south, there are schools, a mall, restaurants and loads of other new stuff being built, all within 200-300m. And on the east... Bongmu Park, with the lake, also just 200-300m away. (If you've read my other blog page, "Bongmu Bug Party", it's the same place where I shot all those insect photos.) The autumn colours are about to start changing, so I've been up at the lake scouting for the best angles. While there, I've been finding some surprisingly great shots, even without the autumn colours.

In my "Fisheye Fun" post, I talked a bit about using a fisheye lens as a landscape lens. It has its pros (massive vistas, easy to focus) and it's cons (distortion at the edges) so it needs to be used carefully. Because of the distortion, horizon lines can't follow the rule of thirds unless you crop later - They must stay at the centre of the lens to avoid the curved earth effect. However, if you do that, and keep any straight lines in the foreground away from the edges of the lens, you're set for some great views that pull in an enormous frame. I shot these first few in the second week of October, early one weekday morning. (Such are the joys of being between jobs - Time to shoot!)

All fisheye shots taken on the Canon EOS 60D with the Samyang 8mm T/3.8 fisheye.
On the hillside immediately behind, you can visit the insect museum, and the terrarium, where they breed orchids and butterflies all year round. A few days after, I headed back up to the lake in the late afternoon to do some more landscapes. I took my EF 16-35 f/2.8L II USM wide angle
and my EF 180 f/3.5L USM macro lenses, plus both the 60D and 5D MkII bodies. These next 4 were shot with the 5D + 16-35, capped with a variable ND filter for some long exposures. The water was a tiny bit choppy, so unfortunately I couldn't get that beautiful crisp glassy reflection as I had the other day, but never mind.

Also from the eastern shore. The shots above and below have an unfortunate artefact which I've decided to leave in for illustrative purposes. Panorama of the lake, shot from a small cove in the south-eastern shore. I had taken my heavy-duty tripod (An Acebil i705 DX) up so that I could use the panning head to follow the water-skiers more smoothly. Sure as eggs, they didn't ski at sunset, so I didn't get any more shots like those above, but as I was walking back around the trail, I found the perfect vantage point. The water was absolutely still, and the sun had just sunk below the horizon a few minutes earlier. The lights had just come on, and the reflections were lovely. I also had my EF 70-200 f/4L USM with me, so I popped it onto the 5D and zoomed out to 70mm. I took 4 more shots for the pano at both left and right extremes, but they turned out to be superfluous. As it is, the shot already has all it needs.

So, I returned to the lake on the morning of November 5th, hoping for some shots of the autumn colours. Well, that worked out just great... There was a low and gentle mist, and no wind, so the water was glassy smooth. These next shots were all shot with the 5D MkII and EF 16-35 f/2.8L MkII, with a variable ND filter on most. Given that the panorama shots were taken with an ultra wide angle lens, there is some distortion and slight colour patching in the skies, but I'm not worried about that too much. The images still stand, and they're all helping me improve on my landscape work.
I started off in 2009 with the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG mounted on the humble Canon EOS 1000D (aka Rebel) body. This is actually a damn good macro lens, even if the body was entry level. The 105 macro is from Sigma's EX range, which means it's their top-end glass, and for the price, it is extremely good value. This is a sharp lens. It's not the fastest for AF, but I almost never used AF anyway, as it was almost always used for macro, and rarely as a portrait or medium telephoto lens. DG tells you that it has a full frame image circle, so it's compatible with the 5D or 1D series bodies. It also comes in Nikon mount, but I'll leave the Nikon talk to people who actually use them. So, anyway - The Sigma 105 served me well for just over 3 years, when I sold it to upgrade to the Canon lenses I now use. In that 3 years though, I got plenty of great shots. Mostly bugs, but a few flowers, and some other random stuff. So, without further ado...

So, you've seen my primary macro work over on my other post - Creepy, crawly, bitey little bugs. But there's so much more to macro work than just insects. Everywhere we turn in life, there's a world of almost microscopic proportions right at our fingertips, but who ever stops to take a closer look at it? That's right - I do.

Here are some more shots taken with the combination of EOS 60D and EOS 5D MkII bodies, plus the EF 180 f/3.5L and MP-E 65 f/2.8 macro lenses, and the EF 1.4x Extender. I also have more shots taken with my old macro lens, the Sigma 105 f/2.8 EX DG, which I have since sold, but I'll save them for another post. Again, flash was the 580 EX Speedlite, and a Horus Bennu ringflash. Note - Korean brand Horus Bennu's flash gear is a great cheap alternative if the Canon prices scare you off. They also do other accessories like tripods, adapter rings, and whatnot, for a lot less than the big name brands.

Right, to business...

Inanimate objects.

So much easier than living things, although not quite as much fun. The freedom of being able to take more time to set up the shots and get clean focus and adequate lighting is nice, but the process can feel quite clinical sometimes. However, the results let you see deeper into the world of ordinary household objects to an amazing degree.
Bear in mind that 6 squares from left to right amounts to 1cm, so the whole photo represents an area of about 1cm x 1.7cm. Which means that the image of any one of those cars parked in the driveway is actually pretty bloody tiny - About 1/5mm or so.

So, there you have it - Even without bugs, macro is an amazing world. I'm endlessly fascinated by the act of zooming in on the tiny little details, or that of separating an object from its surroundings through the macro lens' extremely narrow depth of field and high magnification. It's not everyone's cup of tea (it can require a lot of patience, and the EF 180 and MP-E 65 are both expensive and long, heavy lenses) but if this kind of thing interests you, I can't say enough good things about both lenses. They really are amazing to work with.

I bought my first fisheye lens a few months ago, to see if I enjoyed using one. With no previous experience, I didn't want to shell out for a Canon L-Series right off the bat, in case I didn't like the style. 16mm wide angle was the widest I'd shot at, and I loved that, so it seemed like it was time to try something more. So, I went with a cheapie at first, with the option to upgrade later if I liked it. I got the Samyang 8mm T/3.8. (Samyang also licence their lenses under brand names Rokinon, Bower, and a few others.) It's a medium frame lens, so no good on the 5D, unless you're into solid black circular vignettes, which I'm not. On a medium frame, however, in this case my 60D, it is a pretty solid little performer. Having been designed for video, it has a stepless aperture ring (ie, no clicks, just a smooth continuous motion) on the lens barrel, so you can't control aperture from your dial. However, being able to stop anywhere between your normal values is a good feature, and adjusting a physical aperture ring is no different from a focus or zoom ring. So it's really no issue at all, except for when you check your metadata, where aperture will be listed as 0, as it is on your lcd when shooting. If that doesn't bother you, you're fine.

So, anyway, the fun stuff. What I have come to love most about shooting fisheye, is the way that it changes my composition. I've started looking at my framing in a completely different way. The usual curved-earth or collapsing walls style is fun, sure, but there's so much more to it. Let's go through a few of the different ways to use the lens to accentuate or distort specific elements. All shots were taken with the 8mm fisheye on the Canon EOS 60D. I'm not bothering with listing settings on these - The point of this post is more about looking at form and visual effect.

The Curved Earth Effect.
You've all seen plenty of examples of this. It seems to be the most common use of the fisheye, so I'll keep it to a couple of examples.
Changwon City, South Korea. My home for 4 years before moving to Daegu, about 80-90 minutes north. A view from the 35th floor rooftop near the centre of town. Tripod stem was extended horizontally, with legs laid out flat for maximum stability. Camera was extended out about 30-40cm over the edge of the building, on around a 30 second exposure. A friend of mine had done this shot with a regular wide angle lens, and I wanted to see how the fisheye would compare. The centre of both shots are pretty much the same, but the fisheye creates much more interesting framing with the horizon, and the vertical edge of the building at left.

Substituting for a regular wide-angle lens.

One of the great positives of the fisheye is using it as a super wide angle lens. Used correctly, it can result in massive vistas, with little to none of the typical distortive effects. The trick is to keep your horizon at the centre of the lens, and avoid straight lines at the edges as much as possible.

Not the sharpest of shots, but notice how the horizontal line, close to the centre of the lens, has little of the standard curvature so typical of fisheye shots. Framing this way gives a result very similar to a regular rectilinear wide angle, such as the Canon EF-S 10-22 or EF 16-35, but with a much wider field of view.

Well, that's nice, but...

What happens then when you place the horizon at or near to the centre, but introduce straight lines at the edges? Well, in some cases, the distortion can ruin the shot, but in others, it can actually create a nice frame.
Curved lines, and the fun that can be had with them.
As well as the fascinating effects a fisheye can have on straight lines, it also offers some interesting views of curved lines. Look around for circles, spirals, loops, curving paths, etc. They can be even more fun to shoot.
Changing the shapes of existing frames.

Look out for frames. All around you there are seemingly dull objects that can be totally transformed with the fisheye's distortion. Get up nice and close, and use those drab square boxes to create a brand new way of enclosing your subject and capturing the viewer's eye not only to the subject, but to the frame itself.

A dull square box in the fence suddenly becomes the very frame of the shot. This same perspective with a rectilinear lens isn't half as interesting. It's the fisheye distortion that makes this shot what it is.

So there you have it. A great way of shooting and refreshing your photographic imagination. The fisheye has helped me reinvent a lot of my old thinking, and look at my environments with a new eye. It's a newly developing area, Bongmudong. It's right on the outskirts of the city, so on one side I have all the amenities I need, and on the other... Traditional Korean houses with adjacent vegetable fields, a park, a lake, mountains... So I'm right next to a great place to relax, with a boatload of bugs - Butterflies, dragonflies, scarab beetles, spiders, wasps, ladybugs, aphids, grasshoppers, praying mantises, crickets, roaches, earwigs, centipedes, you name it. For a macro enthusiast like me, it's a dream location. The park even has an insect museum (apart from learning their names, not of much interest to me, as I am only interested in shooting them while they are alive), and a terrarium full of orchids and butterflies that is open all year round. I'm told that deeper into the bush there are snakes, squirrels, and sometimes deer, but I have yet to wander that far in. The lake also has turtles (I should know, I released my 2 terrapins into it just last month) and fish, so there is an abundance of great nature photography to enjoy there. All this just a ten minute walk from my door.

So, my bug setup. I shoot with a Canon EOS 60D and an EOS 5D MkII. Between the two bodies, I interchange the Canon EF 180 f/3.5L macro and the MP-E 65 f/2.8 1-5x macro lenses. I also use the EF 1.4x II extender sometimes, which fits both of those lenses. Swapping the lenses between the medium and full frame sensors, plus using the extender, gives me a good variety of focal lengths to work with, making two very specialised lenses a lot more versatile than their native values. I currently use my Speedlite 580 EX on a gorillapod for the MP-E 65, but will upgrade to the MT 24 EX twin macro flash next spring, when the next bug season starts. Also very useful with that lens is my Manfrotto 190 Prob tripod with a 322-RC2 trigger head, and a Velbon macro rail. It is possible to shoot handheld with the 65, but with the ridiculously narrow DOF (about 0.25mm at 5 x magnification) you can't afford shake, sway, or wobble of any kind, on your part or your subject's. It's a very challenging lens to work with, but when you get it right, the results are magnificent. So, let's take a look then...
